10 Books That Have Stayed With Me/Had a Lasting Impact

If you are on Facebook, you have probably seen the challenge to list 10 books that have "stayed" with you or had a lasting impact. But here's the thing...Only 10? That's insanely difficult. There are more than 10 C. S. Lewis books alone! There are more than 10 theology books outside of Lewis... there are more than 10 fiction books outside of Lewis... But here are the first 10 that come to mind (I will include series at times as one item though):

 1. The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis
 2. Mere Christianity by C. S. Lewis
 3. The Screwtape Letters by C. S. Lewis
 4. The Abolition of Man by C. S. Lewis
 5. The Great Divorce by C. S. Lewis
 6. The Space Trilogy by C. S. Lewis
 7. Til We Have Faces by C. S. Lewis
 8. The Problem of Pain by C. S. Lewis
 9. The Weight of Glory by C. S. Lewis
 10. A Wrinkle in Time series by Madeline L'Engle

After I posted this first one on Facebook, one of my friends claimed I was cheating by posting (almost) all Lewis books on my 1st list and challenged me to do it again without Lewis on the list because, everyone already knows I love his works. So here is my second list:

1. The Ragamuffin Gospel by Brennan Manning
2. Abba's Child by Brennan Manning
3. The Brothers Karamazov by Dostoyevsky
4. A Wrinkle in Time series by Madeline L'Engle
5. The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien
6. Orthodoxy by G.K. Chesterton (At least the chapter on the Ethics of Elfland)
7. The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas (I read this in 8th grade for class, then again for fun, and then again in 9th grade for class. It was my favorite book for a time.)
8. Honest to God: Wrestling Your Way to Intimacy with the Creator by Charlie W. Starr
9. The Harry Potter Series by J.K. Rowling
10.Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson (I remember reading this in elementary school and it had a lasting effect on me.)

What are the 10 books that have stayed with you?

Currently Reading 5/10/2013

I keep trying to make this rule for myself about not starting anymore new books until I finish at least SOME of the books I'm currently in the middle of... But then I tend not to follow that rule... which is why I am currently reading 17 books right now... I anticipate finishing the two at the top of the list first and moving through the list after that. Now if I can just keep myself from starting any new books until I get this list cut down to 5... or at least 10!

1. Against Calvinism by Roger Olson - I am LOVING this book! Olson writes all of the things I have been thinking but of course he does it much better than I had been able to before!

2. Infinite Jest by David Foster Wallace  -This is pretty trippy. But I'm over halfway through this monstrosity now (1092 pgs!), no turning back! I will conquer this book! :-)

 3. Prototype: What Happens When You Discover You're More Like Jesus Than You Think? by Jonathan Martin I just started this one, I'm pretty excited to read it. You can check out his blog here: http://pastorjonathanmartin.com/

4. Love Wins by Rob Bell - Still in the middle of this one, if I could find a way to read more than one book at a time... I would.

5. Through Painted Deserts by Donald Miller
6. Ten Lies The Church Tells Women: How the Bible has been misused to keep women in spiritual bondage by J. Lee Grady

7. The Prophetic Imagination by Walter Brueggemann - I'm about halfway through this one as well

8. Whose Community? Which Interpretation?: Philosophical Hermeneutics for the Church by Merold Westphal

9. Liturgy as a Way of Life: Embodying the Arts in Christian Worship by Bruce Ellis Benson

10. The Bible Made Impossible: Why Biblicism Is Not a Truly Evangelical Reading of Scripture by Christian Smith

11. How I Changed My Mind about Women in Leadership by Alan F. Johnson (Editor)
12. Jesus + Nothing = Everything by Tullian chividjian
13. Real Presence: The Christian Worldview of C. S. Lewis as Incarnational Reality by Leanne Payne
14. Gods at War: Defeating the Idols that Battle for Your Heart by Kyle Idleman
15. Because He Loves Me: How Christ Transforms Our Daily Life by Elyse M. Fitzpatrick
16. Celebration of Discipline (re-read)
17. The Ersatz Elevator (A Series of Unfortunate Events, #6) by Lemony Snicket
